1975 MKIII Norton Commando RoadsterThere's not much I can say that hasn't been already said about the Legendary Commando.Countless books and photo albums have been compiled extolling the many virtues of this remarkable historic machine. In order to compete with the flood of Japanese Superbikes, Norton completely went through and refined the design to "up the ante" for 1975 therefore fixing the oil leaks so they could fit a Lockheed Disc Rear Brake system with a counterpart Conical hub for Quick tire service and easy chain ring (sprocket) changes. The adjustable isolastic motor mounts made it unnecessary for shim replacement by using a ring nut that you can simply spin tighter for the adjustment. Hydraulic tensioners were employed in the camchain case as well as an anti wetsump valve so the oil would not drain from the oil tank into the engine bottom end. The cylinder studs were run up from the bottom end of the crank case through the head instead of bolting the flange of the cylinders down, then bolting the head to the cylinders. The 850cc displacement was kept from the previous year and the main bearings were upgraded with the most heavy duty to date. A dash panel was added utilizing "pilot lights" for turn signal neutral highbeam and ignition light and ignition key location. The shifter was now moved to the left side footpeg and the chain case cover had multiple fasteners around the perimeter to finally seal the primary chain and clutch housing. New hand controls (Cast Aluminum) and electrical switches and housings did away and A paper element spin on filter assembly was employed and all the worries of clogged sludge traps were a thing of the past. This upgrade will allow the newly designed engine to outlast all its British counterparts as well as many automobile engines of the day!!! Last but not least it had an uprated alternator and Electric Start. Sadly this was the last year of production, and while this was hands down the best Norton that came out of the British Wolverhampton factory, operations ceased on this model after the '75 model year was completed.
